About my work...
The diversity of my early works, and even until now,
however has always been a flamboyant display of my unfeigned African
characteristics.
I have since childhood drawn inspiration from
poeple, most especially women which excite my imagination.
I love urban life with multitude of poeple, lots of
traffic-pedestrian traffic, where life is made in the streets and everything
moves together-cars,bicycles,hawkers and even cows and goats. As a child I’d
prowl and inquire through these streets, markets and lory parks recapturing
scenes and making sketches and drawings of poeple in all activities and later
put on a surface.
I adore these women-market women,fish
mongers, hawker’s(kayayo’s),peddlers, mostly carrying babies at thier strong
sweat-scented backs and ampits, some selling biscuits, local beer and even
paracetamol,singing and screaming out to
customers, some wash and dry clothes, cook some meal, all in the bare street and
before everyones eyes.
And the player's,my player's. As a percusionist there's always been that connection between me and the paintings of poeple playing instruments. I could hear the sound and vibrations of the music whiles I paint. Most times I get carried away that I'd just stop to dance and sing and then get back to paint.
All these and more are indelibly imprinted on my mind
and has and will serve as my source of inspiraion however distant I am from
Africa.
My paintings always carry part of me, as an auto-
model I’d pose to capture the exact idea. Also,my warm, energetic and sensitive
temperament can be seen in my works, which are marked by vigor and passion.
I really search for the reality behind the facade as
my works are defined by details and expressions, like taking out all that veins
and wrinkles in an old man’s face and arms on the canvass, thus explaining the
result of my continous quest for accuracy.
The influence of names in African society, like mine,I
believe,is evident in my choice of colours particularly in my current
paintings.Like a naturalist whose always seeking acuracy and not imitation of
reality, my simplified color scheme of earth colours(black & white and brown) create
a stronger work which potray themes in potent and vibrant manner, vividly emphasizing
a play of light, shadow and movement.
My works in a nutshell,I'd say are expressive and
spontaneus, stirred by movement and vitality depicting contemporary themes and other
cosmopolitan subjects.
